The sealed version differs only in that it has a slightly longer first stage
and what looks like a silicone environmental seal. In the event of the seal
being damaged, water will ingress and you now have an unsealed first stage
just like a US4. Thus, an environmental seal failure will not be a problem.

To explain further. Inside the sealed compartment are the same innards as a
US4 - A SS spring, screw thrust adjuster, pressure cap and diaphragm. It is
the diaphragm that seals the remaining functional parts of the first stage
innards from water. So if you lose the environmental seal the diaphragm
provides a (second) water seal just like a US4.

The environmental seal simply prevents water getting inside where the lack of
water motion and well conducted cooling due to pressure drop could result in
ice formation. I dive all year round in the UK with no problems when using
sensible precautions. I have no experience in sub 4 deg C conditions so don't
read anything into the suitability for this sort of diving.

Subject:	Thanks for Apeks Info!

Thanks to the many people who have provided information in response to the
Apeks regulator questions I posed. It looks like recommendations point to
the the US4/TX40 combo. This will be for my first doubles rig that I am
doing some advanced planning for. At present I am planning on a Scuba Pro
R380 for a backup. My main diving interest is ocean/wreck diving.

Can someone please comment on the advantages/disadvantages of sealed vs.
non-sealed first stages (as in the Apeks models)? I'm not sure I understand
the difference or if one has a higher potential for failure in certain
conditions. I don't plan on cold water diving at this point.

If anyone can provide any US dealer info with regards to a US4 DIN/TX40
combo I would appreciate it.

Thanks again to everyone who responded,
Stan Dilcher
