Paul,

I'd second what Art says. I have a little to add.

When I first started diving (also about seven years ago), I was wearing
extended-wear disposable lenses. I asked my ophthalmologist about it (he is
not a diver either) and he also said that the lack of sufficient oxygen to
the eye could cause a problem over time. If I remember correctly, lack of
sufficient oxygen to the eye (long term) is associated with tumors. He
suggested that I sleep without them at night after diving, and also try to
blow fresher air into the mask periodically during the dive.

Wearing disposables *is* a good idea, since it doesn't matter as much if
you lose one! I have yet to lose a contact while diving, but I always carry
an extra with me just in case. A lot of people I know have lost contacts
while diving.

A disadvantage to using a prescription mask as an alternative is that the
lenses are more likely to pop out. And if you carry a backup mask, that
would have to be a prescription mask, too.
