I have found that this is a good thing to do here in the Northeast when
you're on a dive boat with a lot of newbies. This helps keep your mask
somewhere in the vicinity of your face when they kick you in the head while
they're doing their safety stop and you are trying to relax during deco...
With my hood (DUI) and mask (Poseidon Technica) this does not seem to let
any extra water into my hood.

I have not heard that this is counter to DIR. I have gotten used to wearing
my mask that way and did not hear any objections from JJ or Ted Cole during
my GUE Cave 1 class in March.

In addition, when I smash head-first into the wreck at high speed, and the
valve on the pony mounted between my doubles has already broken off from a
previous encounter with the wreck (and therefore can no longer protect my
head), it helps keep me from losing my mask. <vbg>
