I started wearing my mask strap under my hood 3-4 years back (after a suggestion from someone on another list), haven't looked back. Mind you we don't usually get much below 17-18 degrees here so I'm not sure how you'd go in "really" cold water. I wear a polypropylene inner hood which may help minimise any flushing of colder water into the hood (keep the heat in). I added this a few years back during a research trip to Moreton Bay in Winter. We were doing 4-6 dives a day out of a small boat (no chance to dry off between dives, and too busy anyway) and I found the polypropylene made a difference.
