Jess:

My reason for god knows how many times many people have stated since
starting this thread started is that in the event my bottom timer
malfunctions, falls off my arm, is eaten by a shark, exploded in the
chenorbyl blast etc., etc.. I personally have a back up to use if I'm still
alive. I do not find it to be a piece of gear that is cumbersome. I do
subscribe to DIR philosophy, and I dive with buddies and haven't (thank God)
lost them yet or they lost me or ever had to rely solely on my back up
bottom timer, but I have one with me if I do.

I want to look at my very own bottom timer, if possible. I
personally would not want to do a long drifting deco having to look at my
buddy's bottom timer if I don't have to. Plus I get bored on deco and amuse
myself watching the minutes go by on those long stops when I'm free floating
off the Monitor in a swift current.

I respect anyone's decision who chooses to not wear a back up bottom
timer. And I think your side has been well represented on this list. There
are two sides to most things in life and, for me, this is one of them and
not an absolute. I understand that you and others represent a viewpoint
that it is an absolute mistake to ever wear a second bottom timer. I
disagree. It does not mean I disagree with ALL DIR philosophy, because I don't.

Have fun on your east coast trip. Those dives are fun, challenging and you
gets lots of goodies. Who are you diving with? Come dive with us on the
OZARK out of Navarre or come dive the La. oil rigs. If my having a second
bottom timer is your main issue bring your own buddies along. I'm sure I
could learn things from you because, despite statements to the contrary, I
do keep an open mind to learning, and I would enjoy the experience
