I would like to thank everybody who responded to my question. (I got a huge variety of answers, including several to the question of why you put the *other* innertube on the bottle -- the one for stowing the regulator.) The consensus seems to be that the clamp, being composed of a different metal than the stage bottle, will cause corrosion, especially in salt water. In addition, the clamp can damage the soft metal (aluminum), scratch the paint. In addition, the innertube gives the clamp something to "grip". Some people suggested that I could also use duct tape, electrical tape or friction tape (like the kind used on a hockey stick). It was all very interesting. In the end, it led me to believe that we need a FAQ for this list... I've included my original post for reference.
