I am a local diver in Southern California and there are five submarine channels I make a regular pilgrimage to. You can get as deep as you want, recreational deep, technical deep, twilight zone deep or even into LEAN trimix country. The one I think you are talking about is the Redondo Sub Canyon off Redondo Beach, CA. There is nearby parking at Veteran's Park parking lot, freshwater shores and even a Coke machine right there. There are lifeguards and a pay phone in the event they are needed. Its a nice dive-site. The reason I dive this area is that it the site of three historic piers long since burnt down that used to service many types of ships. There are a lot of artifacts out there and I have brought up china, tools, bottles and many other items. There are also some wrecks way out there. Many local dive shops within blocks for fills and there is a nice pier to get a bite to eat before and after the dive. Please note that it gets far deeeeeeeper than you would care to read off your computer, there is heavy recreational boat traffic, limited vis on bad days, heavy current and sometimes a pounding surf entry especially for divers who are technical geared. It can be a very advanced dive, but very rewarding if you are into artifacts and don't have the time or money to dive off a boat. The other sub canyons that are my favorites ar the La Jolla Sub Canyon, just north of San Diego and the Malibu Sub Canyon just north of Los Angeles.
