Chuck, there are sevaral deep(submarine)canyons off of So. Cal..

 Scripts Canyon
 La Jolla Canyon 
 Newport Canyon
 San Pedro Canyon
 Redondo Canyon
 These canyons all come in towards shore from the big channel. San Pedro
canyon is a boat dive. La Jolla canyon has been my favorite so far due
to its prolific marine life.
