Look, you missed the point....Again! First of all, the 'average recreational diver' is not certified to 130 ft. Only 60 ft. If they exceed that, they are beyond their training level. Any program is what you make of it. I'm sure that a lousy instructor would teach an inadequate class, and his students would probably fail in an out of air situation at 130... or at 30 for that matter! It should be drilled into a students head that as long as you follow proper procedures and are as close to your buddy as you should be (especially at 130), your buddies air supply is much closer than the surface. If they are diving shallow then they should be properly trained to do a CESA (controlled emergency ascent) without any assistance (it IS no stop diving - notice that I did NOT say no decompression diving since all dives are deco dives... yes, PADI Instructors can learn!). There are certainly gaps in the PADI training program as it is written, but an instructor is not supposed to be a robot. An instructor is supposed to be knowledgable and capable of filling in the gaps with the relevant information that students need. I do not keep it simple. I teach them what PADI requires them to know, and then I teach them the rest of what they should know. I am not afraid to fail people. If I feel that they are a danger to themselves or anyone else I issue a referral showing that they have completed what I feel they have completed to a satisfactory level and let them decide if they really think they should continue. I think that if we get right down to it, the real problem with PADI courses is the fact that the dive shops sell probably 90% of the courses. The dive shop owners are not going to be too happy when they hire an instructor and that instructor fails 10% of his students because he doesn't feel that they are ready. Those people would certainly complain and probably ask for their money back! Not too good for business.... instructor gets fired and another one comes in..... repeat cycle until instructor who certifies everyone starts working at shop.... owner receives less complaints.... improperly trained divers die.... I'm glad that I teach for myself. I am my boss and if someone is not ready to be certified, they can complain to me all they want! I work with my students, I am patient, but if they just don't get it I won't certify them! I have seen other instructors say to students... That was good enough... or not quite right, but I'm gonna' certify you. Basically, don't blame PADI and don't blame PADI instructors. Blame individuals. Find out who some of the instructors were whose students died at 100m on air and blame them individually - if you can even blame them for someone elses stupidity... Don't criticise me for what you saw someone else do.
