You breathe the "octopus", your backup regulator is hanging around your neck by a piece of surgical tubing. This way when a diver is out of air you hand off the regulator you KNOW is working (because you just finished breathing it), so he gets air right away, then because your backup regulator is right under your chin you go to that. You can even get to your backup regulator without your hands. On top of that, if there is a problem with your backup regulator, since you just had the last breath, you can signal your buddy to buddy breathe with you and everyone will be happy. This is what we mean when we say "breathe the long hose", and it is one of the main tennets behind the "hogarthian gear configuration". The other main tennet being "less is best", if you don't need it, don't take it. There is no reason to take an entire hardware store with you for a 20 minute bounce dive.
