Subject: Jersey reels: Alternatives
Mark,

<<I have to ask, is it being suggested that up-lines or jersey reels or
whatever are useless?>>

That would seem to be the thinking of several folks on the list,
yes.

<<Then what am I supposed to do when I decide to go play on a wreck, then
shoot a bag and swim back to the boat after my deco? >>

Most folks I know consider shooting a bag an emergency procedure. As
such they plan to allow them to return to the anchor line.

<<Drift?>>

That kind of rates up there with planning to shoot a bag in the first
place!

<<What if I don't want to look for the anchor line? >>

Look for the anchor line!?! You mean you get lost on a regular basis?

<<What if I get busy, it takes a while to pop a porthole out of a steel
hull.
And then I'll be too tired to swim with a porthole back to the line. >>

A pair of running shoes and a swim suit will do wonders for these kinds
of problems. <g>

<<What if I get busy, it takes a while to pop a porthole out of a steel
hull.
And then I'll be too tired to swim with a porthole back to the line. >>

Of course you can. It's an emergency situation. Shit hit the fan or
your planning was just bad......use your penetration reel, shoot the bag and
tie off to the wreck. A return trip to remove the nylon line makes a
wonderful excuse to go diving again soon. If it takes you a few days to get
around to it, the guy with the seven knives will handle it for you anyway!<g>

<<And don't tell me what they do in caves, I really don't care and I have
more portholes than most cavers. >>

Now here's part of the problem, a lack of interest in learning
techniques used by others in similar situations but different locations! I
know it may come as a surprise to you but, there is wreck diving in locations
other than the Northeast coast. Most places we just do it a bit differently
than you do!

Bob D.
