I think a very good argument can be made for not carrying a Jersey upreel. A lot of the "Jersey" wreck divers are now carrying a more compact version utilizing 1/8" nylon line. The use of such a reel cancels out it's original intent. It was always my belief that an upreel was to be used as an emergency ascent line in the event you became lost or couldn't make it to the anchor line. The Jersey reel was loaded with 1/4" sisal line which quickly decomposes and in theory would not be a continued hazard to other divers. Obviously, 1/8" nylon line will not decompose, not in my lifetime anyway. So, if you are not using a reel with biodegradable line, why not just carry a standard primary reel? It's more accessible and would serve two purposes. Instead of the thin #21 line, load it up with #36. You would need the amount on the spool to be about 1.5 times you max depth. I don't shoot a bag unless there is a good reason, so I don't leave line laying around on the bottom for no reason. The standard Jersey upreel is bulky at best and the compact models using nylon are just another piece of gear you really don't need. Don't get me wrong, you do need a reel and lift bag on a deep dive. I think Esat hit the nail on the head, some things are just near and dear to the heart. Whatcha'all think???? Flame away.
