paul i'd like to separate the good from the bad unfortunately the Arkie community kind of represents itself as a solid front. (ie. the laws they have been instrumental in passing & the ones they are attempting to pass. it is significant that until now the majority of wrecks discovered were not found by the arkies who wish to have complete control over them. (you didn't answer my question about who found the Florida wreck you are interested in ) when i referred to Fisher i was talking about his father. i'm glad you didn't get into the safety thing it has no bearing on this discussion. as far as changing the laws- please don't try to insult my intelligence with that one. the laws of salvage have been around for hundreds of years. the current laws are an attack on the rights of people to exercise there international privileges under Admiralty Law. the problem is that the Arkies in conjunction with the governments, who see the financial gains of recovering what they perceive as vast quantities of treasure, have gotten together on this issue. we can't fight City Hall & my name aint Quehote. that doesn't preclude me from being pissed of at them & doing what i can to bring out the other side of the issues. BTW why in Gods name would i volunteer my time (& pay a price-you know they charge you to help them) so that some Arkie (getting paid in some fashion) gets the benefit of my expertise in finding things underwater. these SOB's should be paying divers to do the work. you know even the Salvors paid for (sometimes it was just a share of what was found) labor. What a neat scam the Arkies pull on the public. hank In a message dated 97-01-26 14:02:28 EST, you write: << Subj: Re: Archaeologists Date: 97-01-26 14:02:28 EST From: pettennude@us*.ne* (Paul E. Again I state sometimes some archaeologists are wrong. Despite our best efforts to be perfect, we screw up. I think it has something to do with us being human. Some archaeologist have been instrumental in advancing the legislation referred to below for several reasons. The most compelling is that the vessels being protected have some historical value. Remember, documentation wasn't really emphasized until about a 100 years ago. Sometime archaeologists are wrong. But things can be changed if the reasons to change them are sound. Just don't lump all of us together in the same bait bucket, so in the end we all smell alike. Don't get me going on Fisher's bunch. They should be restricted. If any of you have ever been with Kane Fisher on one of his adventures you will know what a loose cannon he is. Remember. He's the guy who turned on the mailboxes while the National Geographic crew was on the Atocha. He almost killed the whole bunch. If you think a piece of legislation is wrong, do what the power brokers do. Instead of pissin' and moanin' go find yourself some legislators and convince them to change the laws. It ain't that hard. You can also go to NOAA with a proposal to do volunteer work on a wreck. We did this with the Northern Light off Key Largo. We felt it should be studied, developed a plan and took it to NOAA. They approved it.
