We call them bolt snaps up here in Alaska, not to be confused with *boat* clips which are what you call "widow-makers". I've got them on all my gear but they can be a real pain in winter. If the air temperature is sufficiently cold, they will freeze solid on you the instant you exit the water and you won't get them open again until you get your rig home and run it under hot water. Kind of a bother on shore dives when you have a hike. Also, I've heard various times on the lists that stainless bolt snaps are preferred to brass. I have both and I can't detect any real difference. Looks like they use the identical spring inside. Anyone know why the stainless are supposed to be better?
