I feel it necessary to comment on the recent post concerning list posting policy. It was stated that repeated "flaming", personal attacks etc. would result in the loss of posting priveleges. I have seen several lists attempt to maintain a similar policy, and always with the same results - the list becomes stagnant and dies. Although I dislike excessive obscenity in messages, I think it is necessary for any post to be subject to an appropriate rebuttal. The absence of these posts does nothing except encourage the distribution of misinformation. If someone makes a post which is genuinely stupid, why not flame? This accomplishes a number of things: it may set the record straight regarding posted information it may discourage the message originator from posting similar (stupid) messages it may encourage the message originator to do more extensive research and repost, resulting in good information I understand the concerns of people with tender sensibilities, but consider this: (as an extreme example) Imagine new subscribers to techdiver (crossovers from rec.scuba) posting some assinine stupidity about spare airs. If these messages were not immediately jumped upon, the list would be flooded with garbage. The flames usually make them stop and LEARN for a while before they jump in. I'm guilty of this myself. When I first joined techdiver, I immediately launched a campaign against George Irvine because of his condescending messages, (and flooded techdiver with meaningless drivel in the process). After an onslaught of his insults (got 'em saved - some were real beauts) I shut up and learned how to dive. Had this not been the case, I probably would have continued posting about things I really didn't know anything about. Mark - guidelines for appropriate language is one thing - what you are suggesting is censorship, plain and simple. -Sean +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Please send messages for the WreckDiver list to: wreckdiver@wreckdiver.com Send subscription and help requests to: wreckdiver-request@wreckdiver.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
