As far as using > them in an argon filled suit - the lack of oxygen 'kills' the reaction.... In rebreathers the action of the absorbent makes heat as a byproduct. This is useful in cold water. (So much heat that some industrial rebreathers for use in hot dry places have a second canister containing a coolant.)
