You can get burnt with these things if you put them close to the skin.
Between layers of clothing they are OK though. I don't think I have ever put
more than about 40% into my suit while I have been using them, but I have
certainly been up to 1.6 bar pO2 a few times, when they seem to burn hotter
but for less time.
I am not familiar with the heater you describe. Another gadget which came
and went was the WABA, (Warm Air Breathing Apparatus), which was a
contraption which warmed your breathing gas between the stages of a reg.
Theoretically a good idea, you waste a lot of calories warming gas just to
heat the surrounding water, but it never seemed to catch on.
