Before the wide availability of the plastic quick disconnects, I used to
put a buckle (like the one on the waist strap) on one of the shoulder
straps of my doubles backpack (before I got smart and converted my old 
doubles backpack into a Hawaiian-Style backpack).  The buckle broke in 
the middle of a deep dive once.  Believe me, it was FAR from a 
life-threatening situation, even with a back-mounted BC.  I just replaced 
the buckle after I got home.
