In general cave training involves more in water training than other technical diver training programs. However in a well designed tech course divers do become quite knowledgeable and complete quite a bit of skill training and equipment handling combined with equipment management. Real training is the diver practicing and using the skills taught in a program whether it is a cave or other technical course. In IANTD the skills in our full wreck and cave course are identical. The difference is that one gets more time in water and skill rehersal/development in the cave course. In my opnion the cave course is the most complete technical skill program available due to the in water time. On the other hand the specific skills taught in a trimix course are of a different nature than cave training so guys apples are apples and oranges are oranges. Don't confuse them there are good oranges and good apples. However good teck divers who practice their skills are equally as competent as divers in their specific environments, as good cave divers are in caves. The best divers are those who cross train and dive in both environments. Tom I have had highly experienced tek divers encounter problems when taking a cave course. I have seen highy experienced and well respected cave divers get in trouble in open water technical diving situtations, including having to be rescued. Fact is one needs to prepare for all environments they are going to dive in. There really isn't a I'm a-- therfore I'm a better diver than you because you are a___ diver. Why can't you guys respect each other based on individual abilities. The dummies are and will remain the dummies and the sharp guys will remain the sharp guys regardless of which environment they dive in. Either place you need to be qualified in.
