Yes oxygen at 20 feet is as bad as the oxygen in air at 220. It is hard to actually determine how many deep air divers died due to oxygen tox. as they die deep and it could be due to a variety of life threatening events-narcosis, carbon dioxide retention, o2 tox. Fact is they are all additive. Therfore the risk at depth on air is somewhat overall more dangerous. We have been advocating using mixes such as EAN 80 at 30-20 and 10 feet to avoid ever being subjected to 1.6 + ata at deco. One problem with o2 deco is the ceiling is 20 feet divers usually hang out a little deeper say 23 feet at this depth the po2 is 1.696 ata. You are using 10% of your total allowable o2 dose per minute. Add this to the o2 dose from the rest of the dive and you have a quitedangerous situtation. For safe deco you do need a po2 of over 1.4 but I would recommend based on the accident probability that one not exceed a maximum of 1.55 ata and only that for a short exposure. EAN 80 at 30 feet is 1.53 ATA by the time you are at the longer 20 foot stop the po2 is 1.24 ata. You can see the added tox safety and it only adds 1 to 3 minutes to the deco and on some air scghedules is sometimes actually a faster deco due to the 30 foot stop on EAN 80.
