He had made numerous dives on the wreck before but this time was lost and running out of air and began to panic. He said he stopped and got his wits together and tried to figure out the problem. It dawned on him that he had slipped up and temporarily forgotten that his map was a floor plan of the ship sitting upright. Since it is on its side that left turn was not a left turn but descending a level, etc. He found his way out, and lived to write the article. :-) It is evidently confusing in there even for very experienced folks with lots of dives on the wreck.
