I am interested in techniques for doing deco stops in open ocean. What do
people do if you need to decompress in open ocean when there is a 1 m (3 foot)
swell running ? It seems a 3 m stop would have a fairly rapid 30% change in
pressure which seems like it might not be a good idea!

I would guess that a solution might be to do the stops deeper (say 5m) and
make them slightly longer, but really you should use specially calculated
tables for this.

I have not done any planned deco diving, but nearly always do a safety stop
at 5 m. Holding even a 5 m safety stop in a reasonable swell (possibly
with a current as well) is quite difficult. Typically for a no-deco
dive to 40 m (130 feet), the shop I dive with will require a 3 minute stop
at 10 m and a 5 minute stop at 5 m as safety stops.

cheers,

David.
