A thought struck me last night on the way home... several people
have pointed out that the archives exist for public persual on the
web, therefore they are "public". Ok as in the above posts, sure
they are "public" but does that give anyone the right to use them
(other than fair use, whatever exactly that is) without permission?

A quick search of the Yahoo index page shows that

-The Chicago Tribue
-The New York Times
-The Wall Street Journal
-USA Today

and many others maintain a "public" web presence. Now certainly
(I think) I can clip the text of any one of their on-line
articles and email it to my friend across the country, but if I were
a print media publication, I dont think I would be reprinting it
without permission (but then I'm not in publishing so someone
perhaps can fill in the details of what permissions they do (if any)
get). But I could be wrong (I'll admit that up front). But I'd
bet a bright yellow snorkel (had to make this diving related)
that the techdiver (and cavers) archives (archives for cavers?)
are worthy of the same (if there is any) protection that the
more "official" services get.

TV stations at least give each other credit when they show footage
from one another. They also seem to always say (if memory serves)
used with permission of WXYZ.

But hey, in some ways this is all rather uncharted net.ground.
Forgive the analogies to other types of media if you dont think they
hold up.

Just a few random thoughts,
Mike

My opinions, not Alcatel's they only function when open.
