DRAEGER AND UWATEC AGREEMENT HERALDS THE INTRODUCTION OF DRAGER REBREATHERS FOR SPORTS DIVERS. Draegerwerk AG and Uwatec AG have agreed to combine their complimentary resources to promote sport diving rebreathers. The Draeger range of mechanical rebreathers, based on the FGG III,the FGT series and others, have become the most widely used military rebreathers in the world. The sports derivative, manufactured by Draeger, has been reconfigured for recreational applications and will be distributed by Uwatec on a worldwide basis under the name Atlantis 1. Use and purchase of the Atlantis 1 will require that the user has qualified in the application of the apparatus. The training structure to achieve this is at present being developed by Drager. The first approved international training programme, by Technical Diving International, was launched at their UK Facilities meeting on May 4th, in Bristol, UK. TDI's first instructor course will be run in July, in the Bahamas, and student and instructor courses will be available thereafter. The rebreather will be available late summer/early autumn. The cooperation between Uwatec and Drager extends beyond the mechanical rebreather. It is the intention tthat Uwatec will develop an onboard computer for a future rebreather system. Commenting on the agreement, Hans Ruchti of Uwatec said : "The agreement is a departure for Uwatec in that we have previously concentrated our effort on products manfactured by Uwatec. With Drager, we have a commercial partner with enormous technical resources, including knoiwledge of breathing and medical requyirements and diving applications.
