Sal on the Sea Hunter that was a complete moron in my = experiences. I guess all NE operators are alike. A few years back I = lived near Mystic Seaport, CT. My house was on the water and when I = wanted a lobster I would put on my drysuit in my livingroom and walk = down to the water. After visiting the local dive shops that ran trips = and seeing the ego driven idiocy at work I decided my safest diving = until I bought a boat was going to be shore diving. I had the misfortunate opportunity to have to subject myself to Sal's = ignorance on a trip to the Doria. First he said he would have several K = bottles of O2 for us on the boat. When we got there from FL., he only = had O2 for his crew. Fortunately we really didn't believe him so we had = arranged to pick some up on L.Island just in case. It turns out he had = as many freeloading crew members as was in our charter party; I use the = word crew lightly because only a couple acted like crew members and were = helpful and OK people. The rest just lounged around and tried to dive.=20 On one dive my partner and I had just returned from the 2nd class dining = room/lobby and were hanging out doing deco. We heard the chase boat = start up. When we surfaced we learned that one of Sal's crewmembers got = lost in the wreck (he was practicing his progressive penetration skills = he was bragging about before the dive); exited away from the upline, and = attempted to deco without a liftbag in a major current. We have a rule = that whenever our people are in the water we have a continuous topside = watch (one of our guys) until all people are back on the boat. We also = carry lift bags for reasons: if necessary to make a drift deco more = managable, and to provide the topside watch with an immediate alert if a = diver is blown off the wreck. Fortunately for Sal's crewmember we were = in the water and therefore we had a topside watch on station. Our topside watch thought he heard someone yelling in the distance and = he had to try three times to get Sal to turn down the radio. I guess = Sal likes to boogie?? Finally Sal turned the radio down and behold you = could just hear someone way off in the distance screaming. Sal's first = comment was something like, "It must be one of your guys." Our topsided = watch retorted, "I doubt it because our guys have lift bags and they = will deploy it immediately if they are blown off the wreck (assuming = that ever happens)." So in goes the chase boat to fetch the progressive = penetrating "I only have one light" crewmember.=20 We ended up sharing china with the crewmembers who didn't seem to be = able to find their own even though some claimed this to be their 4th or = 5th trip out. What a nice bunch of guys we warm-water Florida cave/wreck = diving go into your backyard and eat your lunch are!! In reality one guy = from that trip and several from successive trips ended up coming down to = FL for cave/trimix/wreck penetration instruction and I think had a great = time. =20 - Doug ----- Original Message -----=20 From: George Irvine=20 To: Doug Chapman ; techdiver@aquanaut.com=20 Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 8:50 PM Subject: RE: Survey of NE DiveBoats re: GUE acceptance. Too bad the NE morons can not learn from = him. I have to correct you on the "get in the face" part. I did see him get = in the face of one guy - the Seeker captain, and it needed to be done.
