Brian

You seem to be on the ball. Generally speaking have your bands as high as
possible on the cylinders and adjust you harness to be *not too tight*. Tight
harnesses' are the first things people generally get wrong. As you say, loosen
the waist strap if you can do gas shutdowns easilly, and if necessary, push the
cylinders around on your back to make access easy. Most of all do the gas
shutdown whilst in control of buoyancy and horizontal - then when you move your
cylinders around they stay there.

The harness length depends upon your suit and under suit. For example, when I
went from 200g thinsulate to 400g I had to adjust my harness.

To answer your question, I am 5' 11.5" and my harness is 33" from top of
backplate to the point it re-enters the backplate. I weighed 83.6 Kg the other
day. This setup is for 400g thinsulate and trilaminate or crushed neoprene
drysuit.

On the topic of narcosis you are in many ways fortunate to notice that you
suffer from it, I went for many years (in the darkness) not noticing narcotic
effects and being concerned about this. Eventually, I had a couple of narcotic
experiences that really helped put me on the right track. These days, it is
good to see that people can avoid this experience.

Thanks to all that replied.

I am already evolving my kit into a dir like (no flames please) config . I
use a long hose and donate that if required. My main problem is in getting
the backplate and cylinders at the correct heigths and comfortable. I keep
trying differing ajustments on the harness and the cylinder mounts etc. I do
not have the flexiblity to reach the valves and manifold when wearing the
rig. (short arms ). I have to unclip the belt and throw the kit up and
forward to get to the valves.

I was hoping that some one would reply and say --- well the lengths on my
straps are XXX inches and I am x foot Y.

From the posts it seems there are two opinions on the ER course. I thought
this was nescessary for a basic trimix course.
This is my aim to take the mix course. I regularly dive in the 35 - 45 m
range but I do notice the narcosis. Perhaps I do not deal with it as well as
some others. So obviously any way to cut the narcs down would lead to a
safer and more enjoyable dive.

Many thanks again
