The general rule of thumb is to trim as little as possible(with a very sharp
pair of sissors).  I recommend marking the seals, with a grease pencil or
something similar, to give yourself a guide to cut by.

Many people have had success streching the material instead of cutting it; or
at least stretch some and then cut less.  The thought here is that the less
you cut, the longer you leave the material and therefore the  easier it is to
seal correctly.  

Some of the items that people have used to strech the neck and wrist seals
range from plastic soda bottles to 80cft tanks.  Be careful, streching is
almost as non-recoverable as cutting.
