In regards to the recent Hydrogen Sulfide thread and the degree to which it is toxic: I receintly saw a movie that conveyed that diving in a particular lake with water containing Hydrogen Sulfide would be fatal within 5 minutes. Background: I visited the US National Air and Space Museum, last week, to see an IMAX movie entitled "The Living Sea". The movie was excellent; it showed some outstanding footage of Palau. One of the unique attractions in Palau is the inland salt water lake called Jellyfish lake; which if full of non-stinging Jellyfish. Below some depth the water contains disolved Hydrogen Sulfide(they didn't say to what amount). The movie showed a scientist, Paula Martin, gathering water samples from within the Hydrogen Sulfide zone. They make the comment that Hydrogen Sulfide is highly poisonous and that a five minute exposure would have been fatal, due to transdermal absorbtion. FYI on the Jellyfish: Evidently, the Jellyfish are not carnivorous but "grow their own" via a symbiotic relationship with some internal photosynthetic bacteria. During the day the Jellyfish migrate across the lake following the sun overhead and at night they descend into the H2S zone to fertilize the bacteria.
