Steve,

In all candor, this is bullshit of the highest order.. Did you read =
that before you posted it??? If Tony was such a God Damn pioneer and =
had all these protocols to protect against a failure why in hell didn't =
he take the one additional step that seems obvious to everyone else =
except you cowboys...

Had he had a buddy with him he would still be alive...

Testing homemade equipment, solo on a wreck is just plain dumb and to =
ignore that fact and attempt to cast him as some pioneer is equally as =
stupid...

    Remember, trying to stand on the top of a sharp point give you very =
little=20
    purchase.=20

           I see you have very little patience nor can you answer a =
couple of=20
    questions directly without losing you temper.=20
          No, the last time I seen Tony Maffatone was last August when =
he was=20
    stepping off the deck of my boat alone to test his equipment. Tony =
knew the=20
    risks of diving alone and only dove alone, we discussed the risks =
many times,=20
    Tony dove to invent and invented to dive. Tony designed and built =
all his=20
    equipment, none store bought if it was he took it apart and =
redesigned it and=20
    made it better. Tony spent, three years building his system and 3 =
months=20
    diving his new design in 15 to 30 feet of water and this dive the =
second one=20
    to 100 feet was the next stage of testing. Tony talked about =
equipment=20
    failure and he tried to design every backup into his system, He had =
just=20
    removed the scuba second feeling the rest of his design had all =
backup=20
    needed.=20
          From examination of the incident and equipment, there was =
design=20
    fault with tank balance, if the lowest tank of the seven tanks was =
drained=20
    empty and others more than half full it flipped him on his back up =
side down.=20
    The system weighs out of water 265 lbs in water 150 lbs, Tony =
struggled to=20
    right himself he cut his suit legs to get the gas out and right =
himself but=20
    being upside down the XO FFM mask flooded he cut both his shoulder =
harness=20
    and made a free assent, rising feet first upside down and didn't =
make it.=20
    Like Berman and Exley Tony was pioneer and didn't die sitting at =
his=20
    computer and talking diving.=20
          He died following his dream, maybe not the way he say he would =
choose,=20
    but he did choose his time and place. We grieve Tony, like many will =
grieve=20
    Steve Bermans and Dave.=20
          You only think you are in control, I hope you never lose it.=20

        Why do you have to have a buddy?=20
             This guy had a massive heart attack and died almost =
instantly, his=20
        video camera showed 22 minutes of video and a shudder and the =

        Where was Steve Berman dive buddy?=20
        Are the rules different for different area around the world, =
such as cave,=20
        NE=20
        wreck southern waters west coast or where ever?=20
        This is not an argument just some information and questions.=20
        Risk management is done by each diver themselves and the risk =
they are=20
        willing to take when diving alone are there own or with a dive =
partner,=20
        solo=20

had its=20

          Routine Outing Fatal For Diver=20
          Mourning an unexplained death=20
          by J. Jioni Palmer=20
          Staff Writer=20

          David Scholl developed a passion for Long Island's=20
          waterways as a child growing up in Lawrence, near=20
          Jamaica Bay. As a youth, he'd spend countless hours=20
          fishing and boating, but what he loved most of all was=20
          diving deep below the ocean waves.=20

          That love carried through to adulthood as Scholl, 42,=20
          did a four-year stint in the Navy and worked part time=20
          at a diving-gear shop in Mineola. He seized every=20
          opportunity to go out onto the water, even=20
          volunteering on weekends as an instructor on board the=20
          dive boat the Seahawk, helping less experienced=20
          aquanauts hone their skills, relatives said.=20

          But Saturday, while on a routine jaunt from Freeport=20
          to a ship wreckage about 18 miles south of Fire Island=20
          an unexplained tragedy befell Scholl that took his=20
          life.=20

          "He was a diving fanatic," says his older brother Fred=20
          of Wading River, who dives for the New York City Fire=20
          Department. "His house was like a shrine; it was full=20
          of artifacts he picked up diving." Saturday's accident=20
          bewildered Scholl's friends and relatives, who said he=20
          was an experienced diver. "If anybody got hurt, Dave=20
          would be the first person to go help," said=20
          stepdaughter Sarah Silverman, 27. "It's kind of=20
          shocking that he'd be the one needing to get rescued."=20
          Scholl had explored the wreckage of the G&D,a coastal=20
          steamer that sank in 1918,more than a dozen times. He=20
          had anchored the dive-boat Seahawk to the wreckage=20
          about 110 feet below the surface on the sandy ocean=20
          bottom and given the "all-clear sign" indicating that=20
          it was safe for others to dive, his sister said.=20

          Not long after that, a fellow crewmember discovered=20
          his lifeless body near the wreckage.=20

          He was brought to the surface, where the boat's crew=20
          administered CPR and radioed the Coast Guard, which=20
          took him by helicopter to Nassau University Medical=20
          Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead,=20
          said Suffolk County Homicide Det. Sgt. Arthur Ahl.=20

          "There is no indication at this point of a crime," he=20
          said, adding police were waiting for results of an=20
          autopsy by the Nassau County medical examiner.=20

          Divers from Suffolk's Marine Bureau are expected to=20
          examine the wreckage today in hopes of learning what=20
          went wrong, he said.=20

          Scholl's relatives said they hope police recover the=20
          underwater video camera he was carrying to shed light=20
          on the incident.=20

          Grieving friends and relatives yesterday remembered=20
          Scholl, who worked for the Village of Valley Stream=20
          driving a recycling truck, as an affable man with a=20
          generous heart who could light up a room with=20
          entertaining humor.=20

          "He was the class clown and the family comedian," said=20
          his sister Susan McBride, 48, of Rockaway Beach. "He=20
          was the happy-go-lucky guy that everybody loved."=20
          Scholl is survived by his companion of 10 years, Sue=20
          Silverman of Long Beach; his mother, Carole, and=20
          another sister, Debra; two children and four=20
          stepchildren.=20

          A wake will be today from 7-9 p.m. and tomorrow from=20
          2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.=20

          at the Meserole Funeral Home in Inwood. Funeral=20
          services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran=20
          Church of the Incarnation in Cedarhurst, with=20
          cremation following.=20
