    Why do you have to have a buddy?=20
    You don't have to have a buddy! As this guy didn't as well as Steve =
B didn't. However, the one thing that we know for sure about all the =
solo diving fatalities, is that NO-ONE knows for sure exactly what went =
wrong, because NO-ONE was there to see it. Or assist with whatever went =
wrong, possibly changing the outcome. =20
      Did the video camera turn around to show this guy inflating his =
bc(showing that there where no other problems), or maybe he got tangled =
in something dropped his camera/light to deal with it(the shudder). Then =
the stress of dealing with the situation brought on the heart attack??? =
Who knows for sure??? All of us have made mistakes/choices diving at one =
time or another and are glad to still be here. A GOOD dive buddy is =
our back-up. Sometimes saving us from ourselves. I know how hard it is =
to find a GOOD dive partner. I have done dives solo, with a bad buddy =
and a good one. The ones with a good partner, are by far the best and =
most memorable. I'm sure this message will not alter the way you dive, =
but hopefully the newer people will start to understand the benefits of =
having a competent buddy vs the liability of not having a competent =
buddy, and maybe if there were more competent buddys, no-one would want =
to dive alone. As always, take care and dive safe, Bob =20
        This guy had a massive heart attack and died almost instantly, =
his=20
    video camera showed 22 minutes of video and a shudder and the camera =
dropped=20
    along with his mounted light, he started to inflate his buoyance =
system and=20
    died his light snaged into the wreck and held his body there.=20
    Where was Steve Berman dive buddy? . =20
    Are the rules different for different area around the world, such as =
cave, NE=20
    wreck southern waters west coast or where ever?=20
    This is not an argument just some information and questions.=20
    Risk management is done by each diver themselves and the risk they =
are=20
    willing to take when diving alone are there own or with a dive =
partner, solo=20
    divers do not put others at risk.=20
          You may not like it but that the facts. NE wreck diving has =

        Routine Outing Fatal For Diver=20
        Mourning an unexplained death=20
        by J. Jioni Palmer=20
        Staff Writer=20
       =20
        David Scholl developed a passion for Long Island's=20
        waterways as a child growing up in Lawrence, near=20
        Jamaica Bay. As a youth, he'd spend countless hours=20
        fishing and boating, but what he loved most of all was=20
        diving deep below the ocean waves.=20
       =20
        That love carried through to adulthood as Scholl, 42,=20
        did a four-year stint in the Navy and worked part time=20
        at a diving-gear shop in Mineola. He seized every=20
        opportunity to go out onto the water, even=20
        volunteering on weekends as an instructor on board the=20
        dive boat the Seahawk, helping less experienced=20
        aquanauts hone their skills, relatives said.=20
       =20
        But Saturday, while on a routine jaunt from Freeport=20
        to a ship wreckage about 18 miles south of Fire Island=20
        an unexplained tragedy befell Scholl that took his=20
        life.=20
       =20
        "He was a diving fanatic," says his older brother Fred=20
        of Wading River, who dives for the New York City Fire=20
        Department. "His house was like a shrine; it was full=20
        of artifacts he picked up diving." Saturday's accident=20
        bewildered Scholl's friends and relatives, who said he=20
        was an experienced diver. "If anybody got hurt, Dave=20
        would be the first person to go help," said=20
        stepdaughter Sarah Silverman, 27. "It's kind of=20
        shocking that he'd be the one needing to get rescued."=20
        Scholl had explored the wreckage of the G&D,a coastal=20
        steamer that sank in 1918,more than a dozen times. He=20
        had anchored the dive-boat Seahawk to the wreckage=20
        about 110 feet below the surface on the sandy ocean=20
        bottom and given the "all-clear sign" indicating that=20
        it was safe for others to dive, his sister said.=20
       =20
        Not long after that, a fellow crewmember discovered=20
        his lifeless body near the wreckage.=20
       =20
        He was brought to the surface, where the boat's crew=20
        administered CPR and radioed the Coast Guard, which=20
        took him by helicopter to Nassau University Medical=20
        Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead,=20
        said Suffolk County Homicide Det. Sgt. Arthur Ahl.=20
       =20
        "There is no indication at this point of a crime," he=20
        said, adding police were waiting for results of an=20
        autopsy by the Nassau County medical examiner.=20
       =20
        Divers from Suffolk's Marine Bureau are expected to=20
        examine the wreckage today in hopes of learning what=20
        went wrong, he said.=20
       =20
        Scholl's relatives said they hope police recover the=20
        underwater video camera he was carrying to shed light=20
        on the incident.=20
       =20
        Grieving friends and relatives yesterday remembered=20
        Scholl, who worked for the Village of Valley Stream=20
        driving a recycling truck, as an affable man with a=20
        generous heart who could light up a room with=20
        entertaining humor.=20
       =20
        "He was the class clown and the family comedian," said=20
        his sister Susan McBride, 48, of Rockaway Beach. "He=20
        was the happy-go-lucky guy that everybody loved."=20
        Scholl is survived by his companion of 10 years, Sue=20
        Silverman of Long Beach; his mother, Carole, and=20
        another sister, Debra; two children and four=20
        stepchildren.=20

        <BR>waterways as a child growing up in Lawrence, near =
<BR>Jamaica Bay.=20
        As a youth, he'd spend countless hours <BR>fishing and boating, =
but what=20
        he loved most of all was <BR>diving deep below the ocean waves.=20
        <BR><BR>That love carried through to adulthood as Scholl, 42, =
<BR>did a=20
        four-year stint in the Navy and worked part time <BR>at a =
diving-gear=20
        shop in Mineola. He seized every <BR>opportunity to go out onto =
the=20
        water, even <BR>volunteering on weekends as an instructor on =
board the=20
        <BR>dive boat the Seahawk, helping less experienced =
<BR>aquanauts hone=20
        their skills, relatives said. <BR><BR>But Saturday, while on a =
routine=20
        jaunt from Freeport <BR>to a ship wreckage about 18 miles south =
of Fire=20
        Island <BR>an unexplained tragedy befell Scholl that took his =
<BR>life.=20
        <BR><BR>"He was a diving fanatic," says his older =
brother Fred=20
        <BR>of Wading River, who dives for the New York City Fire=20
        <BR>Department. "His house was like a shrine; it was full =
<BR>of=20
        artifacts he picked up diving." Saturday's accident =
<BR>bewildered=20
        Scholl's friends and relatives, who said he <BR>was an =
experienced=20
        diver. "If anybody got hurt, Dave <BR>would be the first =
person to=20
        go help," said <BR>stepdaughter Sarah Silverman, 27. =
"It's=20
        kind of <BR>shocking that he'd be the one needing to get =
rescued."=20
        <BR>Scholl had explored the wreckage of the G&D,a coastal=20
        <BR>steamer that sank in 1918,more than a dozen times. He =
<BR>had=20
        anchored the dive-boat Seahawk to the wreckage <BR>about 110 =
feet below=20
        the surface on the sandy ocean <BR>bottom and given the =
"all-clear=20
        sign" indicating that <BR>it was safe for others to dive, =
his=20
        sister said. <BR><BR>Not long after that, a fellow crewmember =
discovered=20
        <BR>his lifeless body near the wreckage. <BR><BR>He was
brought =
to the=20
        surface, where the boat's crew <BR>administered CPR and radioed =
the=20
        Coast Guard, which <BR>took him by helicopter to Nassau =
University=20
        Medical <BR>Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead, =

        <BR>said Suffolk County Homicide Det. Sgt. Arthur Ahl.=20
        <BR><BR>"There is no indication at this point of a =
crime," he=20
        <BR>said, adding police were waiting for results of an =
<BR>autopsy by=20
        the Nassau County medical examiner. <BR><BR>Divers from =
Suffolk's Marine=20
        Bureau are expected to <BR>examine the wreckage today in hopes =
of=20
        learning what <BR>went wrong, he said. <BR><BR>Scholl's =
relatives said=20
        they hope police recover the <BR>underwater video camera he was =
carrying=20
        to shed light <BR>on the incident. <BR><BR>Grieving friends
and=20
        relatives yesterday remembered <BR>Scholl, who worked for the =
Village of=20
        Valley Stream <BR>driving a recycling truck, as an affable man =
with a=20
        <BR>generous heart who could light up a room with =
<BR>entertaining=20
        humor. <BR><BR>"He was the class clown and the family=20
        comedian," said <BR>his sister Susan McBride, 48, of =
Rockaway=20
        Beach. "He <BR>was the happy-go-lucky guy that everybody=20
        loved." <BR>Scholl is survived by his companion of 10 =
years, Sue=20
        <BR>Silverman of Long Beach; his mother, Carole, and <BR>another =
sister,=20
        Debra; two children and four <BR>stepchildren. <BR><BR>A wake =
will be=20
        today from 7-9 p.m. and tomorrow from <BR>2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.=20
        <BR><BR>at the Meserole Funeral Home in Inwood. Funeral =
<BR>services=20
        will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran <BR>Church of the=20
        Incarnation in Cedarhurst, with <BR>cremation following.=20
