Subject: Re: Lasik and diving

Summary: Diving after lasik is fine, even deep diving.

Detail:

I had lasik over 2 years ago to correct extreme near sightedness and
astigmatism that was almost off the scale of what they could correct. Two
weeks afterward I was 20-15 in one eye and 20-20 in the other, and had no
astigmatism at all. The doctor said the astigmatism correction was "text book"
and usually is not that perfect afterwards.

I could see reasonably well the day after the procedure. Most people can see
well right away, but I think the astigmatism correction was what needed to
settle in. That actually took about two months to get completely stable.
During that time, small, fine print was difficult or impossible to get to
focus. By that, I mean very small fonts, smaller than the usual phone book
font. At some point within the first 2-3 months I suddenly realized I could
read those things without a problem. I'm not sure when it transitioned.

Because of the nature of the incision, a small flap in the outer layer of the
cornea, healing occurs very quickly, and does not weaken the cornea like
earlier types of refractive surgery did. There is no problem with diving, even
deep diving, due to the lasik procedure. Due to risk of infection, if the eye
gets wet, your doctor may recommend not diving for a short time following
surgery. I had to wait two weeks.

Your decision regarding lasik falls more into the acceptable risk to your eye
sight category, rather than any limitation a successful procedure would impose.

Am thinking about having laser eye surgery (lasik) to sor out short sightedness
(-5.8, -5.8) and another eye problem. I do 'shallow' trimix (max 75m stuff) at
most. I've looked on the net, but haven't found anything relevant. I know a
few of you on this list have had lasik ... any chance of letting me know your
experiences? TIA
