Paul, 

If you're getting cold using C4 in 42 F water, then you are probably wearing 
something between your skin and the C4.  That extra layer actually will make 
you colder than not having it, particularly if the extra layer is not 
something that will wick moisture from your skin.  Avoid cotton.
