In cave diving (or at least my diving), turning a dive has always been
accomplished by a thumbs-up which is an unambiguous "end of dive"
signal. A vertical twirling index finger means "turn around" and is used
to indicate that you want to do a 180 from your present position. Using
the vertical twirling index finger to indicate the end of a dive is too
ambiguous and could mean, "we can't go any further here, let's turn
around (and maybe explore another passage)" or simply, "let's turn
around." The dive may or may not be over. If after giving that signal
your dive bud gives you a "why" then a further conversation might ensue.
The thumbs-up means the dive is over - period. If the dive is over there
is no discussion, exit and discuss it at Wendy's.

Later,

JoeL
