The index finger pointed downward and twirling in a counterclockwise manner is used primarily South of the Equator. One twirl means let's think about turning, two twirls, let's turn, three twirls, let's turn and swim back that way (usually used with a nod). If the index finger is twirled up it means you're not impressed with the passage you're in. One twirl means you've seen better, two twirls, was this your idea or mine? Three twirls, I can't believe we did this lame dive, let's go somewhere else. A thumbs-up is generally recognized as the unambiguous exit signal. When used in conjunction with other fingers it can add those all-important subtleties critical to any long, nuanced conversations far back in silty, restricted passageways. For instance, thumbs-up with the index finger extended on the right hand, add the left hand giving an "OK" sign which encircles the index finger and travels up and down the index finger in a pumping action. This is an après-dive indicator for coed buddy teams. It's all about clarity. Finally, the middle finger extended vertically is usually given during long-winded discussions of intricate hand-signals and means "Screw this jive, I'm going diving."
