Norman I refer to VR3s as wrist weights. If you prefer to spend your dive time doing deco rather than on the wreck, then the VR3 is the dive computer for you. On a recent shallow dive it required 15 minutes more deco than an Oceanic computer. On the routine Trimix dives we do I expect it to require twice the deco I do. Time will tell. Built for the job - depth rating 150 meters - Multiple gas choice '10' - switches can be done on the fly any time including changes from CCR to OC and back again - tracks CNS clock - advises air/back gas breaks - advises deep stops - user controls when to change gasses and personal safety factor settings - gives time, date, temp, ascent rate, feet or metric - has a back light - dive profile downloads to computer - can be used to generate next dive profiles/dive plans using history of previous dives - completely upgradeable - built like a nuclear bunker. Use it on all dives. But still keep slate and D/timer in pocket. Maybe the right one for tech diving doesn't exist yet, but if it did it would beat working from tables any day. I believe computers have their place in no deco stop diving. The procedure for recovering from a computer failure on a no stop dive is pretty simple: 1. Go do a safety stop. If you don't have a time reference, use air pressure as a guide. 2. Get out of the water. 3. Either get yourself straightened out on the tables or stop diving until you are off the tables. A computer failure on a deco stop dive isn't nearly that easy in that vital information about your deco obligation went away with the computer. Perhaps one day there will be a computer with an independent, redundant system that can fix this properly. There are other issues as well. IP>Anyway, I just purchased DecoPlan. I ran the profile of my last dive (145' for 30 mins on 24% EAN, deco on 50%) and using the default gradient factor settings it gave about the same total dive time as the Nitek 3, but with a very different set of stops. That's one of the other issues. For instance, can you program for Pyle or WKPP stops? I expect functions like that to hit the diving computers eventually. Perhaps one that takes a PROM of some sort will come along. IP>One thing I particularly like about the Nitek is that with the PC logging program it will calculate my SAC, which for me at this stage is useful to know across a series of different real dives. The logging is one of the great functions of the computers. In addition to being a backup for your own paperwork, it becomes a "black box" for diving accidents. My Oceanic keeps data on what I have been up to over the last few dives. IP> Anyone know if its possible to get it to do this in gauge mode (i.e. it doesn't know about gas switches, so can these be input later for SAC calculations)? Do the people who make your Nitek have a website? IP>And a question on DecoPlan. The help says that the gas requirement calculation includes the reserve, but in non-metric mode the reserve settings in the preferences are ignored. So is the reserve an extra 50%? IP>Anyone know if the gas management features that are only available in metric mode are going to be implemented in non-metric at any time in the near future? -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
