Tim I would not worry about minor and short variations in depth of the kind you mention. However, you should be practising DSMB deployment and your deco under a buoy. Some UK Trimix groups deploy a deco station, some do drifting deco under a DSMB. Even if you are a "shotline person", you need to carry and be able to deploy a DSMB from the wreck in the event of not being able to get back. It is also good to practice deployment in "blue" water. I would spit out my regulator and go to the backup (back gas) if I could not immediately regain control of my buoyancy. Generally, it will do no harm and have no detrimental effect to go to back gas for a short time. I would not even adjust my deco as a result. When I did my Trimix training we had to bring a Casio to time our stops to the second. Watch out for this sort of obvious nonsense as it has much to offer in humour potential on your course. I find that I am fluctuating between 5.7M (18.5 feet) and 6.6M (21.5 feet) in calm conditions and not attached to a shot-line or buoy. From what I have read this seems to be safe enough but I would be interested to know if others are able to control buoyancy more reliably. In some unimaginable emergency, at what depth would you spit out your O2 reg? A pointer to the right thread would be appreciated.
