I suggest you look into The Physiology and Medicine of Diving, 3rd or
4th edition.  The 3rd edition contains a chapter on artificial gills
et al.  I don't yet have the 4th Edition in hand, and so can't specify
whether that chapter has merely been rewritten or has been removed.
