I beg to differ, and not just because this message appears intended to
quell discussion, which is what this list is all about.  I do agree
that none of the explanations posted here are complete, but there
do exist scientifically provable explanations.

Check out "Diverse Divers: Physiology and Behavior" by Kooyman.  It
has a quite carefully designed, *experimentally verified* set of
hypotheses and explanations, and should be required reading for anyone
interested in the subject.
