Folks - I'm looking for some help finding information on a vaguely remembered topic from the 1960's. I recall some discussion of gas diffusing membranes that could be used to pass oxygen from water to air. Science Fiction editorials predicted the use of these membranes as 'artificial gills', which was bunk because the diffusion rate was too slow to support anything larger than a lab rat. My interest in the membranes stems from a related application. As I recall, the membranes passed only molecular gasses of a particular size (eg 02), and the rate of diffusion was controlled by the preasure gradient over the membrane. It seems like this technology might lend itself to being used in a solid state O2 injector for a constant partial pressure rebreather. Does anyone out there have a contemporary reference for these materials, their diffusion characteristics, and applications? Has anyone already tried this? Thanks, Scott.
