Guys, I agree that this is very important no matter what side of the fence you are sitting on. And while we all enjoy a good flame war now and again :-) this issue transcends the flames. It effects all of us. To that end, and I know Gary Gentile has ruffled a few of the feathers of people in this group. But you have to give him credit respecting his efforts against the US Govt. vis-a-vis the Monitor. In the same vain Gary and I have teamed up to fight the Canadian Govt. in fighting this issue. We have hired local council and to date have spent nearly $7,000 of our own money to fight this issue. In short, if you want a more detailed account you can e-mail me privately and I'll expand, the Canadian Govt. is taking the position that THEY have the unrestricted right to designate a shipwreck as * historical * and thus subject to Govt. control. The legislation provides for no oversight, no public input, and complete Govt. control. The 2 shipwrecks that we have taken issue with are the Hamilton and the Scourge. They are wrecks from the War of 1812 and sit in ~ 300' in Lake Ontario. We plan on filing suit shortly. Public outcry is of the utmost importance. In fact we have a few locals helping us out with media attention and the lawyer we hired will be generating public support as soon as practical from a legal strategic perspective. This might be one of those issues that we can actually help each other out for a change. Let me know if you need more info.
