George,

Agreed. Things are tamer now. Sankey and I never managed mixed it up despite
the fake and I remember very well your getting booted on Cserve. If I
remember right what did it was you sending the Sysop of the Scuba Forum a
private email suggesting that he should SYD. I'm sure you got the sushi for
that one.

I was on Cserve for a long time and made a lot of friends there. Some knew
what they were doing, some didn't and still don't. And yes, it WAS a
strokefest of awesome proportions--I was one of them. I finally signed off
of Cserve for good. But that is where I got my initial info about cave
diving when I got interested in 1988-9.

It's funny how things work out. The thing that got me interested in cave
diving in the first place was an article in Outside Magazine about Huautla
and Bill Stone's group down there in Mexico. I thought it sounded like a
pretty awesome thing to do and started reading whatever I could, online and
elsewhere. What I didn't know at the time was that the guy was dangerous to
himself and others--mostly to others--until a few years ago when Outside ran
another article about that rebreather death down there that Stone chalked up
to insulin shock, I think. I forget the guys name, but the piece in Outside
gave one the distinct impression that Stone was obsessed and "go-crazy" and
even willing to risk lives to get a record. Well, I don't think he ever got
it there and it took Exley for him to get anywhere in Wakulla during his
first expedition there.

The biggest thing I've heard out of WakkyII is them complaining about the
cut-up lines and nasty notes they found in Wakulla. I've met your team of
divers and I don't believe this at all. You may be a madman online, but I
know the WKPP team is serious and dedicated to safety and exploration. I
cannot imagine a situation where any of them would endanger another diver.
Quite the opposite. Safety and results were lacking in both in my opinion
during the Wakulla II stint. For Heinreth to imply as she has done in more
than one place that the WKPP engaged in sabotage, and the implication is
that such could cause a death and that would therefore be a form of murder,
is way beyond the pale. The only death I'm aware of in their team was during
a solo dive in the basin and that one was pretty costly.

There was a time when I thought that you should just shut-up and let others
speak, but the flaw in that reasoning was the notion that you had any
control whatsoever over what others have to say. You do not. I wish that
those who disagree you and others on whatever relevant grounds would do
other than send nasty lovenotes online. What they are missing is that in
between the rants you and others are dispensing valuable info from a rich
source of personal experience in the Woodville Karst Plain systems. Despite
the way the package is wrapped, it beats the hell out of what the whiners
have to offer to date.

I was checking out an ADSL info site yesterday to find out why I was getting
timed out on my MAC and found the Mindspring CTO slugging it out with some
other tech guy on a bulletin board dedicated to the subject. They were
getting pretty harsh with each other over there, but in between the "moronic
protocol," "only a jerk would . . .", and "can kiss my protocols" I got a
wealth of info. So much so I bookmarked the site for future reference.

I view these lists as similar to a group of divers shooting the shit before
and after dives. Sometimes it gets a little rough. Those who don't know dick
are going to get slammed and wander off, but if they think their ideas have
merit they'll wander back and if they have the guts to be heard, then
they'll step up and pet the pony once more.

Keep the words flying . . . on both sides.

Later,

JoeL
