Chris Werner,

If you read my post completely you might have noticed the following passage:

"I don't mean every single tight place where there could be zero visibility,
but in those areas where there could be multiple paths and only one leads to
the exit."

Also you might rethink cave diving if line entanglement is a common problem
you experience. I have yet to become hopelessly entangled by a line or
multiple lines in a cave or wreck as you describe.

In your email you claim that the deaths at Madison Blue came from the
following:

"It is obvious that these guys got themselves into a situation in which they
could not figure out how to solve. They were unfamiliar with this portion
of the cave probably due to the fact that there had been a collapse here
earlier. Instead of blindly pushing through a restriction, they should have
made sure the line was properly placed so that they could find their way
out. They also should have been careful not to get tangled or break the
line in the first place"

Has it been confirmed that the line was broken or that a knot slipped. You
mention that they blindly pushed through a restriction. Is this an area
that has zero visibility as you go through it (tannic)? Are you claiming that
the deaths were their fault and that running a separate line would not have
saved their lives?

On another note if you are trying to upset me by criticizing my reasoning
skills and berating me, you will have to do better than that. If you feel
the need to behave the same way with me in person because you disagree with
an idea that I put out for discussion then send me an email next time you
plan to visit CA.

I have received twenty seven emails from other cavers who have told me that
they already follow this practice or feel it is a good idea. I appreciate
the responses from those who are into discussing different practices and
methodologies that work for them.

Sincerely,

Greg Kuiper
