You make a good point. I do this already whenever I go through a tight, silty area where I don't have complete confidence in the permanent line. At a minimum, I give the permanent line a gentle yank in both directions before proceeding. If I have any doubt about the integrity of the line, I run my own. While I've never had a permanent line break on me, I know at least two cavers to whom this has happened.
