The way I see it, if your diving skills are so rusty that you're likely to break your manifold by crashing into something, you should consider spending some time in a pool practicing, or give up diving. One of the justifications I've heard recently on why people use ponies is that they don't want to spend the money on isolator-equipped manifolded doubles and opt to use their singles with a pony as a backup. Another reason I've heard recently is that doubles are too heavy and unwieldy on the surface; a single+pony is easier to transport between the car and the boat since you can take them apart. Why someone would choose to reduce their pre-dive workload or to be frugal with their life-support equipment is beyond me, though.
