The spool spins around my finger with my thumb providing friction until it reaches the surface. If I drop it accidently it is not a big deal. The spool can not jamb causing any CF. Errol Errol, thanks for the reply. From my understanding you are one of the DIR instructors and I would assume the people at Brownies dive DIR, for as you know they are distributors for HALCYON. What I don't understand is I mentioned the spool method of deployment to them. They dismissed it as unsafe and suggested I purchase a new reel, hum, I wonder why? Either your method is unsafe or there turning into dive shop monkeys. In any case are you diving with a Halcyon lift bag? If you are what is your method of filling it when diving wet (inflator/blow) and who makes the spool you are using? The two spools that I had broke very easily but really inexpensive as far as reels go.
