Bottom line is, if you don't need it, you don't take it. Not a matter of pieces. It's a matter of setting the gear up for the dive...that is DIR as well as what you wear. I don't always dive a drysuit, but I have an Argon set-up...since it's DIR to wear the bottle on the left tank, do I wear it just for the hell of it? No...same reason I don't wear a light if I don't need it.
