The incident report indicated Chris Sr. didn't last too long between surfacing and losing consciousness. How do you know you're not already developing a hit as you dump bouyancy and drop below the waves? It might be time to think long and hard about support divers and solid surface support on deeper/longer trimix dives. Limited bottom times to avoid major deco are another alternative. You can't count on blowing significant deco without major problems; there aren't even any guarantees when you are following your profile (or else your buddy would be okay). Certainly you could do a rescue to the surface in that situation, and I believe most of us, given no other alternatives, would feel obligated to try. However, I was taught years ago by some wise old NAUI instructors that a good diver uses his knowledge, judgement, and planning to avoid having to demonstrate his emergency skills. The phrase "Don't Be The Second Victim" was also emphasized. Proper contingency planning could make a world of difference here. Sun Tzu wrote that "The general who in a hundred battles is always victorious is not as great as the one who achieves all of his objectives without fighting." You'll get more respect for handing the diver off to a properly-prepared support team than for "running into the machine guns" to take him to the surface yourself. Anyway, just my humble opinion. -- Anthony DeBoer <adb@on*.ca*> -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
