I have no reason to believe that you are making this up but really who the hell needs weights with double steel tanks. Are you sure that they were not just listening to storys about tech diving and decided to go and order gear? If not then we all would like to know who sold them the gear and told them to practice in it. >I don't know if a DIR instructor recommended the hip weight, but > he did, indeed have one. They didn't need the hip or V-weights, hell I would sink right to the bottom in the rig you described. > Now, you are making an assumption. I never said that they were using dry > suits. I dive 7mm wet suit with double 95's and a cave light sometimes with an AL 80 stage or two. My wings have plenty of lift. However in the rig you mention I would once again sink like a rock (and I am normally negative with no gear on). I really think you owe new tech divers on this list the name of the instructor or to verify if maybe they did some of this on their own. > This was a rank beginner. The way the hose is supposed to be wrapped all that needed to be done was to trace the hose up the dfront of the body and around to the second stage. However your right a beginner never in doubles with minimal dives does not even have a comfort zone with regular OW gear never mind a cave setup. 1. We would just love to ask them who the instructor was that told them to go home and dive in that rig. I am sure the appropraite agency would like to know as well. 2. They shouldn't have had any weights on them as the tanks and light was enough to sink them like a rock (given they were in average to great shape). 3. They shouldn't have been in the gear to begin with and you should of asked for a cert card up front or a dive log. Don't boats ask this anymore? I am not knocking you just asking that the story be fully verified as the divers might of just been trying to slip on by without getting the proper trainning as some on this list has suggested doing. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
