The gas in your middle ears builds up as you ascend, until it escapes through the E. tube. When there's a slight imbalance between left and right "fullness" it causes conflicting input to each side's vestibular apparatus. When the vis is poor you've got less visual input to tell you which side is providing the correct reading, thus the more severe vertigo. For the same reason, if you're on the verge of going sick or dizzy from boozing or deep-on-air, do not shut your eyes! Rather, focus on something stationary, hold on to it and obtain as much sensory input as possible. (Disclaimer: The author does not suggest that imbibing and deep air are recommended practices in any way whatsoever). Try pausing for a moment and yawn (Frenzel) to equilibrate both middle ears. If you proceed ascending the imbalance persists. regards, Hans -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
