However, putting it on first means that if the weight belt falls off accidentally, the crotch strap will hold the belt thereby avoiding a ballistic ascent. To deliberately ditch a weight belt put on under the harness is now a two stage process: undo waist strap and then undo weight belt. In "technical" i.e. no clear surface diving, as mentioned in an earlier post, you have to sort your problems underwater. Blow and go is not an option. The most likely failure mode with a weight belt is that it is ditched by accident - the crotch strap can prevent this. (This situation becomes even more likely if the diver is wearing a compressible exposure suit.) For these reasons and for streamlining, many people use a V-weight which cannot be ditched independently of the back cylinders.
